Conditions of Flow



RIP, Dr. C! The godfather of flow research, Dr. Csikszentmihalyi, recently passed, and I felt it was important to reiterate the conditions of flow here:


  1. Challenge meets skill level

  2. Action and awareness merging

  3. Sense of total control

  4. Time transformation

  5. Concentration on the task at hand

  6. Clear sense of goals or purpose

  7. Loss of self-consciousness

  8. Unambiguous feedback

  9. Autotelic experience (intrinsically rewarding, in and of itself)

Look at your sport engagement. How many of the above are you experiencing? How often? How can you create routines that help you reach these conditions more consistently?
